Physical Education is a mandated course in New York State. All pupils must participate in the physical education program just as they do in other aspects of their academic program; physical education is a required subject area (Education Law, Article17, Section 803).
Students are expected to:
- Attend class according to their class schedule. All students must maintain ninety percent (90%) attendance rate in physical education to be eligible for course credit.
- Be prepared for activity with appropriate attire: sneakers that tie, shorts, T-shirt, sweat shirt, warm-up pants and/or jacket.
- Make every effort to perform to their maximum potential in relation to the activity to which they have been assigned.
- Remove ALL jewelry (including watches, rings, bracelets, body piercing decorations, etc.) before participating in physical education class.
SWIMMING
All tenth and eleventh graders must successfully complete a unit in the pool (swimming, water sports) in order to receive credit for physical education for the semester.
GRADING
TRADITIONAL PE CLASSES (9, 10, 11, and 12): The numerical grades for each marking period are based 60% on the daily fitness performance, 30% on the demonstration of basic skill competencies, and 10% on written quizzes that evaluate the acquisition of knowledge.
PROJECT ADVENTURE (12): The numerical grades for each marking period are based 60% on the daily fitness performance, 20% rubrics and individual improvement, 20% journal completion. For a student to receive full credit for the fitness potion of the grade it is necessary for them to execute every mini-fitness lesson.
MAKE UP CLASSES
At state recommendation, we offer early morning (6:45-7:10) and late afternoon (1:45-2:27) make-up classes for students who miss class due to illness, injury, absences, and/or lack of appropriate attire, etc. Only the first 35 students will be allowed to participate for fitness credit. Missed competencies or quizzes can be made-up by mutual arrangements between individual students and their teacher.
MEDICALS
Those students classified as non-participants because of a physician verified medical exclusion (those excluded for more than three (3) weeks) will be assigned to a reading and writing program called “Sportsfolio”. Students who are medically excluded from a regular participation class will receive a grade based on a daily sportsfolio assignment.
Students will not be required to participate on any given day when accompanied by a note from a parent or guardian. However, students will not receive credit for the class but will have the option of making up that class.
